Wood,
Hay, and Stubble
WOOD, HAY, AND STUBBLE
Words & Music by Glenda H.
Davis, 2003
[Matthew 5:16; 6:1-4; 1
Corinthians 3:10-15]
If we're working for men's
praise,
For applause and worldly
fame,
Wealth and riches--all that
men desire--
We may be a big success
In this world that's such a
mess;
But on that final day, when
tried by fire,
(We'll find it's) Wood,
hay, and stubble--just a pile of rubble--
When we do things for
ourselves, not for the Lord;
But if we'll give God the
glory, now that's a diff'rent story,
We'll have the Father's
praise as our reward!
We may be the best in town,
Or the best that can be
found,
But what is the foundation
for our zeal?
If we're not building on the
Lord,
Then our works will be
destroyed,
When on that final day they
are revealed.
(We'll find they're) Wood,
hay, and stubble--just a pile of rubble--
When we do things for
ourselves, not for the Lord;
But if we'll give God the
glory, now that's a diff'rent story,
We'll have the Father's
praise as our reward!
When we work for Jesus'
cause,
We're not eager for applause.
If we are, then that's our
full reward.
But when done in quiet ways,
Not for vain and empty
praise,
Men see our works, but
glorify the Lord.
(Then they'll be) Pure gold
and silver, precious stones to build there,
On Jesus Christ, the
Cornerstone.
Instead of wood, hay, and
stubble--just a pile of rubble;
Let's do all for the Lord and
Him alone!
Wood, hay, and
stubble--just a pile of rubble--
When we do things for
ourselves, not for the Lord;
But if we'll give God the
glory, now that's a different story,
We'll have the Father's
praise as our reward!
Yes, we'll have the
Father's praise as our reward!

Matthew 5:16 Let your light
so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and
glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 6:1 Take heed that
ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye
have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. 2 Therefore
when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that
they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have
their reward. 3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand
know what thy right hand doeth: 4 That thine alms may be in
secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall
reward thee openly.
1 Corinthians 3:10 According
to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise
masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth
thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which
is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any man build upon this foundation
gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble;
13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall
declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire
shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 14 If any man's
work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a
reward. 15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer
loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
