Sitting on the Premises

SITTING ON THE PREMISES

Words by Glenda H. Davis, MD

(Take-off on "Standing on the Promises," by R. Kelson Carter, 1886)

Sitting on the premises, I cannot stand

For anyone to hug my neck or shake my hand;

That makes me uncomf'table, so I just plan to

Sit here on the premises alone.

Sitting, sitting,

Trying harder every day to be a Christian;

Sitting, sitting,

I'm sitting on the premises alone.

Sitting on the premises, I know full well

That everyone around me here can surely tell

That I am not a hypocrite who’s bound for hell!

Sitting on the premises alone.

Sitting, sitting,

Trying harder every day to be a Christian;

Sitting, sitting,

I'm sitting on the premises alone.

Sitting on the premises, I know full well

That everyone around me here can surely tell

That I am not a hypocrite who’s bound for hell!

Sitting on the premises alone.

Sitting, sitting,

Trying harder every day to be a Christian;

Sitting, sitting,

I'm sitting on the premises alone.

The preacher says that no one here can save himself;

All must trust in Jesus Christ, and no one else!

Even when he looks at me, I'm still compelled to

Sit here on the premises alone.

[music tempo changes...]

Then I feel God's Spirit speaking to my soul--

"Child, just trust in Me and I will make you whole,

Cleanse you from your sin so that you can behold Me,

Sitting at the right hand of God!"

Jesus? Jesus? --There's no other name by which I must be saved!

Jesus, Jesus, I'm standing on Your promises alone!

Oh, the freedom I now have within my heart!

Jesus Christ has given me a brand new start,

And put His Holy Spirit in me to impart

The wonders of the promises of God!

Standing, standing,

Standing on the promises of Christ my Savior!

Standing, standing,

I'm standing on the promises of God!

Acts 4:10  Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11  This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. 12  Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Romans 8:34  Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

2 Peter 1:2  Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, 3  According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4  Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
